How to thread a vintage Singer sewing machine

To thread a vintage Singer, raise the take-up lever to its highest point and lift the presser foot, then take the thread from the spool through the guide, between the tension discs, into the check (take-up) spring, up through the take-up lever, down through the guides, and through the needle from the side your model requires.

Key points

  • Take-up lever at its highest point before you start: every Singer manual says so.
  • Presser foot up while threading, down when sewing or testing tension.
  • Most problems come from missing the tension discs or the take-up lever.
  • Needle direction: left-to-right on the 66, 99, 185 and long-shuttle models; right-to-left on the 15-91, 201, 221, 222K and 301; front-to-back on the 400/500-series slant-needle models.

StepsStep-by-step threading

  1. Raise the take-up lever to its highest point by turning the handwheel towards you.
  2. Raise the presser foot. This opens the tension discs. Threads Magazine lists threading with the foot down as a classic cause of tension problems.
  3. Spool to first guide. Put the spool on the pin and take the thread through the guide on the arm.
  4. Tension discs. Down and between the discs. On the 201 the manual says from right to left; on class 15 machines the tension is on the faceplate above the presser bar.
  5. Check spring. Pull the thread up into the loop of the take-up (check) spring until it clicks into its fork.
  6. Take-up lever. Up and through the hole in the lever.
  7. Guides. Down through the faceplate guide and the needle-clamp guide.
  8. Needle. Thread it from the correct side (table below) and draw about two inches through.

The Featherweight’s throat plate even carries an arrow reminding you to thread from right to left. If the needle is in the wrong way, see vintage Singer needles.

ProblemsThreading problems and fixes

  • Thread nests under the fabric: the top thread missed the tension discs or the take-up lever. Rethread with the foot up and the lever at the top.
  • Thread breaks: the 221K manual lists a bent or wrongly inserted needle, too much tension, a damaged needle hole or foot, or a badly inserted bobbin case.
  • Thread pulls out of the needle when you start: start with the take-up lever at its highest point and hold both threads for the first stitches.
  • Stitches still poor: check the tension and the bobbin.

QuestionsFrequently asked questions

Should the presser foot be up or down when threading?

Up. The tension discs only open when the foot is raised, so the thread can seat between them.

Which way do you thread the needle on a Singer 15-91?

From right to left, with the needle’s flat side facing left.

Which way do you thread a Singer 66 or 99?

From left to right, with the flat side of the needle to the right.

How do you thread a slant-needle Singer like the 401A?

Follow the same path; the needle is threaded from front to back.

Why does my Singer keep unthreading?

Start sewing with the take-up lever at its highest point and hold the thread ends for the first few stitches.
